Report | EAIO Economic Newsletter - Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in EAIO
The April's monthly letter by the French Treasury in EAIO focuses on the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in EAIO
The monthly East Africa and Indian Ocean (EAIO) study has just been published by the SER of Nairobi, with the contribution of the SE of Dar es Salaam. This month's letter focuses on the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in EAIO. Here's a brief description:
Inspired by the success of Asian models, the region's countries have gradually incorporated the concept of special economic zones, primarily export-oriented, into their industrial development strategies. Mainly specialized in the textile and agri-food industries, these zones are nevertheless struggling to produce the desired effects in terms of attractiveness and industrialization. This is evidenced by the decline in the manufacturing sector at regional level, whose share of GDP has fallen from 12.0% in 2000 to 7.2% in 2022. This downward trend is attributable in particular to a lack of infrastructure and human capital.
